The final Project Partner Meeting of the CalWomenTech Project has been scheduled for October 8, 2010 at the Four Points Sheraton in Emeryville, CA from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. The meeting is for the community college sites participating in the CalWomenTech Project and will provide an opportunity to share and celebrate your successes, discuss your challenges and problem solve with the other member sites of the CalWomenTech Project.
We have invited Dr. Mary R. Anderson-Rowland, Director of the Academic Success Programs at the School of Computing, Informatics and Decisions Systems Engineering at Arizona State University, to be the keynote speaker and discuss proven strategies from her own work on retaining women in technology. Dr. Anderson-Rowland has extensive experience working with female and minority students from two-year colleges, as you can see from her biography.
In addition, our evaluator will present on our project evaluation to date. To see the complete schedule for the day, take a look at the official agenda (PDF). Both the San Francisco and Oakland airports are close to the hotel. The Oakland airport is an easier, less busy airport than SF International and is preferred by many local residents.

Keynote Speaker Bio
Dr. Mary R. Anderson-Rowland, Director of the Academic Success Programs at the School of Computing, Informatics and Decisions Systems Engineering at Arizona State University (ASU), has been a strong advocate for women in technology for over 40 years.
In 1974 she became the first woman engineering faculty member at ASU and remained the only one for 10 years. For the past seven years Dr. Anderson-Rowland has directed two upper division Academic Scholarship Programs with an emphasis on women and under-represented minority students with unmet financial need, averaging 40% women in the program (more than double the percent in the college enrollment.) The retention and graduation of these program students in these programs has been over 90% compared with 77% retention of upper division students who began at ASU and 61% retention of upper division transfer students. In addition, 30% of the community college transfer students and 40% of the non-transfer students have gone on to graduate school compared with less than 18% nationally.
The CalWomenTech Project is funded by The Program for Research on Gender in Science and Engineering from The National Science Foundation - Grant no. 0533564
The WomenTech Educators Training got us thinking intentionally about who we were going to target for outreach, how we were going to target them, and how we would follow up to make sure we had actual results linked to the different programs and events that we were holding. Since then, it has grown organically and blossomed into something that our college just does naturally.
I think getting together as a team with intention—because we're all so busy—and developing a written plan that we could stick to was what made all the difference. I don’t think we would have ever done that if it wasn't for the WomenTech Educators Training.
